AT&T can be taken as a prime example. In recent news, it seems that AT&T Labs is shifting to an open nature. Ma Bell recently disclosed a number of developments that had been made in AT&T Labs. Interestingly, these developments incorporated aspects of network data that AT&T normally grants to its developers.

These are the most valuable resources available to any network and should not be trifled with. The biggest reason why most networks have so far remained closed is that the right balance of security and quality has not been reached.

The biggest problem with broadband companies opening up their networks is all the problems that could come with it. An open network is, in itself, a less secure variant of a closed network. This significantly increases the risk of acquiring a network infection, worm or problem. In fact, due to the differences in technology, the network itself could lag or crash.

When broadband companies start opening up their networks, they have to ensure that they do not compromise the security of their networks.  According to Amoroso, security is the biggest concern that AT&T has at this moment. If a high level of security is not provided to our customers, they will not use our services due to the inherent security risks involved.

Another problem with open networks is discovering ways to make money from it. Open networks quite literally ‘open up’ a range of possibilities. According to Krish Prabhu, the chief technology officer (CTO) of AT&T, there is a list of endless possibilities with an open network. However, identifying which ones of these possibilities are real money makers is the problem.

In a further statement, Krish Prabhu stated that broadband companies have real potential as far as open networks go. They could easily enhance the revenue of any company provided they have a clear understanding of the risks involved. They need to ensure that the quality of the services provided does not come at a reduction in security. If this is the case, no revenue will ever be made off open networks.

It seems that with all the advancements that have been made, security remains a very pressing issue. If broadband companies switch over to open networks, they need to ensure that the security of their systems or their networks is not compromised.

For the big unified Privacy Policy coming up on March 1st, Google embarked on the most widespread campaign of privacy awareness in the company’s entire history. As a result, when I fall asleep at night now, I see “We’ve changed the way we do dreams. Dismiss. Learn more.”

Ironically, this attempt at transparency also has a lot of people worrying about the evil things that Google may be doing with personal data. A little paranoia is a good thing when it comes to Google – or to Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, our ISPs, or pretty much everyone else that gets their hands on our sweet, tasty data.

But right now, we’ll focus on Google, and especially on Google’s flagship service: Search. You may be surprised to find out how much of your search history is stored or, if you’re already properly paranoid, you may not be surprised at all.

Let’s take a quick look at Search History, first on Google’s servers, and then on your own browser, and figure out how much we can get rid of, before it’s too late.

Step One: Google Web History

If you don’t have a Google Account, you may happily skip ahead to the next section. But if you’ve ever created a log in for Gmail, Calendar, Android, or any of Google’s umpteen services, you have a Search History.

1. Go ahead and log in, and go to any Google page that displays the black menu bar at the top (such Google Search page, Gmail, Maps, News, Docs, etc.). Some services won’t give you that option yet, such as YouTube.
2. Quickest way? Type (or click on) https://www.google.com/history/ See you at Step #6.
3. Otherwise, look toward the top right of the window, and you’ll see a little drop-down arrow on the right of your avatar. Click on this. If for some reason you still have the older version of Google, you may instead see a gear-shaped icon in the black toolbar itself.
4. On the menu that drops down, click on the link that reads “Account Settings.”
5. Lots of useful things you can do on this page, but for now just scroll down to the bottom. You’ll see three very powerful links for deleting Google products — up to and including your entire account. If you’re only concerned with “Search History,” click on the bottom link that reads “Go to web history.”
6. Take a minute or two to come to terms with how much info is there. You can remove items one by one, or click on the “Remove all Web History” link.
7. While you’re there, you may want to limit Google’s history-making powers even further. Pausing web history, or limiting the kinds of history Google collects, can make deleting your web history unnecessary in the future — although if you plan to keep using your Google Account, it won’t hurt to check back in every once in a while. I turned my web history off months ago, and I still like to make sure that it’s stayed off since then.

Step Two: Browser History

To be fair, it’s not all about Google. Your browser keeps track of your history for some very good reasons — to speed up page loading, to give you a reference if you need to find something that you remember but didn’t bookmark, etc. But any of this could potentially be used against you — even if that week that you spent looking at homemade explosives was really just for a school project.

Internet Explorer:

 

1. In IE7 to IE9, look to the top right for the Tools menu — either a gear icon, or the word “Tools” itself, or you can just hit ALT-X from your keyboard.
2. Go to menu item that reads “Safety.”
3. “Delete Browsing History” should be the top submenu item that pops up.
4. In IE9, you can also remove History items one by one, by opening the “Favorites” menu and clicking on the “History” tab — you can sort your history by date or site, and right-click on any item to get the delete option.
   And, if you’re running IE 6.x or earlier, you have far bigger security worries than your browsing history.

 

Firefox:

 

1. Depending on the version, click on the “Firefox” button or the “Tools” menu item at the top.
2. You’ll either see “Clear Recent History” right away, or you’ll need to click on the “History” submenu item to get there.
3. Like IE, you’ll get the opportunity to delete cookies and stored passwords as well as browsing history, and you’ll also (despite the “Recent” part of the name) be able to delete ALL of your history.
   PLUS, you get to tell Firefox to stop storing your Search History altogether. From that same “Firefox” or “Tools” button, click on “Options” instead. Select the “Privacy” tab and you’ll see a drop-down box with options for automatically clearing your search history.

 

Google Chrome:

 

1. Click on the wrench icon at the top right.
2. Go to “History,” about halfway down on the menu that pops up. You’ll see all of the individual pages that Chrome has stored.
3. Click on the “Clear all browsing data” button at the top, whereupon you’ll be greeted by the usual choices (cookies, cache, download history, etc.).
   • When deleting your browsing history, you also have the choice of time frames, from “the past hour” all the way to “the beginning of time” (yes, Google has a sense of humor).
   • With any major browser, you have the option to browse anonymously by default, which won’t add any pages to your history. Microsoft calls it “In Private Browsing,” Google calls it “Incognito,” and Firefox calls it “Private Browsing.” This is useful when you want to keep history turned on during ‘official’ browsing sessions.

    

Ok, so what’s the bad news? Google (along with every ISP and online service that handles browsing data) is both legally required and professionally motivated to maintain server logs of things like emails, IP traffic, and cookie data — and they’re NOT required to let you view them, change them, or delete them.

So what’s the only way to truly keep your data private? Yep, give up the Internet completely. And no cell phones. And no credit cards. I’ll do it if you do it first!

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a great tablet which is experiencing continued success in both the UK and global markets – despite being originally banned in both Germany and Australia. It’s a top-of-the-range tablet that many Android owners turn to, although its younger brother – the Galaxy Tab 8.9 – is also becoming popular with tablet owners due to its more portable size. Surely, judging by this, the even more portable Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus should be even better. However, that may not prove to be the case. We’ve been hands on with the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus today and here is our review of it:

Design

The brushed metallic dark grey plastic backing, featured on a number of Samsung’s ‘Galaxy’ products, is again present on the Galaxy Tab 7.0. Despite looking cool, it can’t be ignored that this is plastic – far inferior to the style and quality shown on Apple’s iPad, for example. Its three megapixel camera and flash on the back of the Tab 7.0 Plus are just about visible, but do take some pretty high quality photos – nowhere near the standard set by the Transformer Prime from Asus – but for a 7″ tablet, not too shabby. There is also a two megapixel front-facing camera, which again, isn’t that bad.

Physical buttons are limited to just power and a volume tab, with Honeycomb eliminating the need for capacitive touch buttons on the short side when compared to the older, original Galaxy Tab. The standard 3.5mm headphone jack is situated on the top right of the tablet when held portrait – the way Samsung have designed it to be used – and on the left hand side there is a microSD slot which allows for up to 32GB of storage. On the bottom of the Tab 7.0 Plus is two extremely small speakers, which if truth be told, aren’t very good. The sound quality is there, but they are far too quiet – perhaps a clever attempt to get you to buy the official Samsung multimedia hub? I don’t know. Also featured on the bottom of the tablet is Samsung’s 30-pin connector for charging and docking.

Battery Life

One of the greater features of this tablet is its relatively high battery life, and it doesn’t sacrifice anything on performance to get it. If tests carried out on the tablet are to be believed, this is the speediest 7-inch tablet available – making it faster than the original Galaxy Tab and the BlackBerry PlayBook. The battery life lasts a little over 8 hours when based on slightly larger than typical use – watching movies on loop with the wi-fi switched on. Realistically, this little tablet has about 10 hours of standard use in it, which almost puts it up there with the iPad 2.

Competition Comparison

We thought it would be a good idea to match this up with its competition. After all, comparing it with its older brothers (the Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1) would be truly unfair – they are great tablets at a larger size and a much bigger price bracket. For less than £300, you’d also be able to pick up a BlackBerry PlayBook (albeit a price-reduced version) and also an Acer Iconia A100. So where does the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus stand up? First place, easily. It’s a good little tablet and is streaks ahead of similarly priced tablets. However, the much cheaper Kindle Fire is undeniably better, and half of the price.

Summary

This is, undeniably, a great little tablet for a cheap price. However, it is not going to win over the tablet world in the year of 2012. If this was released in 2010, or late 2011, it would have had some real impetus. The fact is, it wasn’t. For those on a tight budget, looking for a portable tablet, I would definitely recommend…the Archos 80 G9. Ahem, I mean, you couldn’t go too wrong with the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus.
