The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a great tablet which is experiencing continued success in both the UK and global markets – despite being originally banned in both Germany and Australia. It’s a top-of-the-range tablet that many Android owners turn to, although its younger brother – the Galaxy Tab 8.9 – is also becoming popular with tablet owners due to its more portable size. Surely, judging by this, the even more portable Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus should be even better. However, that may not prove to be the case. We’ve been hands on with the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus today and here is our review of it:

Design

The brushed metallic dark grey plastic backing, featured on a number of Samsung’s ‘Galaxy’ products, is again present on the Galaxy Tab 7.0. Despite looking cool, it can’t be ignored that this is plastic – far inferior to the style and quality shown on Apple’s iPad, for example. Its three megapixel camera and flash on the back of the Tab 7.0 Plus are just about visible, but do take some pretty high quality photos – nowhere near the standard set by the Transformer Prime from Asus – but for a 7″ tablet, not too shabby. There is also a two megapixel front-facing camera, which again, isn’t that bad.

Physical buttons are limited to just power and a volume tab, with Honeycomb eliminating the need for capacitive touch buttons on the short side when compared to the older, original Galaxy Tab. The standard 3.5mm headphone jack is situated on the top right of the tablet when held portrait – the way Samsung have designed it to be used – and on the left hand side there is a microSD slot which allows for up to 32GB of storage. On the bottom of the Tab 7.0 Plus is two extremely small speakers, which if truth be told, aren’t very good. The sound quality is there, but they are far too quiet – perhaps a clever attempt to get you to buy the official Samsung multimedia hub? I don’t know. Also featured on the bottom of the tablet is Samsung’s 30-pin connector for charging and docking.

Battery Life

One of the greater features of this tablet is its relatively high battery life, and it doesn’t sacrifice anything on performance to get it. If tests carried out on the tablet are to be believed, this is the speediest 7-inch tablet available – making it faster than the original Galaxy Tab and the BlackBerry PlayBook. The battery life lasts a little over 8 hours when based on slightly larger than typical use – watching movies on loop with the wi-fi switched on. Realistically, this little tablet has about 10 hours of standard use in it, which almost puts it up there with the iPad 2.

Competition Comparison

We thought it would be a good idea to match this up with its competition. After all, comparing it with its older brothers (the Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1) would be truly unfair – they are great tablets at a larger size and a much bigger price bracket. For less than £300, you’d also be able to pick up a BlackBerry PlayBook (albeit a price-reduced version) and also an Acer Iconia A100. So where does the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus stand up? First place, easily. It’s a good little tablet and is streaks ahead of similarly priced tablets. However, the much cheaper Kindle Fire is undeniably better, and half of the price.

Summary

This is, undeniably, a great little tablet for a cheap price. However, it is not going to win over the tablet world in the year of 2012. If this was released in 2010, or late 2011, it would have had some real impetus. The fact is, it wasn’t. For those on a tight budget, looking for a portable tablet, I would definitely recommend…the Archos 80 G9. Ahem, I mean, you couldn’t go too wrong with the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus.

While the iPhone 4S has nearly all of the features we were expecting from the iPhone 5, it’s just not the same. Is it?

Are consumers able to see past more than just a series of letters and numbers, or does 4S just not add up to the hype promised by 5, despite having the incredible capabilities we were anticipating?

The New Features

As predicted, the iPhone 4S comes with the new operating system iOS5, which features iCloud, Apple’s service that draws on the cloud computing principle. With iCloud, a user can access all the information from all of his iGadgets from any location.

The 4S also features the new A5 processing chip, meaning it’s twice as fast as the iPhone 4 with dual-core graphics, allowing it to process games 7x as fast. A brief demonstration showed that the iPhone 4S is able to process spectacular graphics in real-time, a large step beyond what the iPhone 4 could do.

The battery life of the 4S can support up to eight hours of talking, six hours of web browsing through a 3G connection and nine on a WiFi connection, 10 hours of video and 40 hours of music. Pretty impressive.

A new wireless system can support better call quality; a feature surprisingly overlooked in previous iPhone remodels. The wireless network also allows the 4S to be a global phone, meaning that long distance calling bills are a thing of the past.

In an attempt to compete with point and shoot cameras, the 4S offers an outstanding 8-megapixel camera with backside illumination for 73% more light and a third quicker response time than the snail-speed iPhone 4 camera. With the 4S you can actually capture a moment instead of anticipating its arrival. Face detection, better white balance and a 2.4 aperture with increased sharpness make this a totally new type of ‘camera phone’. The video recording capabilities include 1080p quality with noise reduction, movement stabilization and great color quality.

And, something unexpected: Siri. Siri is Apple’s voice command assistant. Siri will tell you everything you want to know about the world. Kind of. If pressing a single button is to bring up the weather is too inconvenient, just ask Siri. “Should I expect rain today? I have a picnic planned.” Siri will tell you it’s supposed to rain all day. Reschedule your picnic or forever hold your peace. Or, if you don’t feel like taking four seconds to set your own alarm anymore, Siri can help you with that too. Essentially, any task you can already do on your phone, but choose not to — just ask Siri to do it for you. It will get done.

Price? Availability?

The price has been set at $199 for the 16GB, $299 for the 32GB and $399 for the 64GB. The sizes will be available in both black and white and will be available for pre-order on October 7th with a release date of October 14th.

Sure, we wanted to hear the words iPhone 5, be dazzled and rush out in a buying frenzy. Instead we got the words iPhone 4S, the same features we expected and the addition of Siri. Will that be enough to make us forget about the number five?

Before 2009, most people hadn’t even heard of Android. Google launched its mobile product in 2008, with the T-Mobile G1, but it was received with little fanfare. There was good reason for that, too. In 2008 the Android platform was a work in progress. Most of its early patrons were hackers who embraced its openness. They created apps, utilities, and custom versions of the OS. It wasn’t until a year later that Android came into the mainstream, and it took even longer for it to make a significant dent in Apple’s market share.

This is good news for Android tablets. There are certainly a few parallels between the Android smartphone and Android tablet timelines. Last year Samsung got the ball rolling when it released the Galaxy Tab. It was a decent offering on the surface, a 7-inch tablet that offered a different flavor than the iPad. Yet it also had a number of issues, mainly the porting of the Android smartphone OS to a tablet. Since Android was made for the smaller screens of a smartphone, it didn’t really line up well with a screen twice as big.

When the original Android had issues, the development team hammered them out and released a new version of the OS. The same happened with tablets. In early 2011 they finally released Honeycomb, which is essentially Android for tablets. That opened the door for a number of Android tablets, but none of them quite caught on. We saw this a few times in early 2009, when HTC released a few devices — most notably the Hero — and Motorola tried their hand with the CLIQ. Some of these devices received hype, but they didn’t really live up to it. Apple still dominated, and it wasn’t particularly close.

It wasn’t until November 2009, after a heavy “Droid Does” marketing campaign, that Motorola finally broke through. They teamed with Verizon Wireless — which had to combat AT&T’s iPhone exclusivity — to release the Motorola Droid. That opened the floodgates. People started to recognize the Droid as a legitimate smartphone option, which led manufacturers to release Android devices more rapidly. HTC came front and center, working with Google to create the Nexus One and then releasing the Legend, Desire, Legend, myTouch 3G, EVO 4G, Wildfire, and Aria all in the first half of 2010. LG got into the game heavily, releasing four devices in the first half of 2010, while Motorola continued rolling out devices. It was a good time for Android.

To date Android hasn’t had that catalyst with its tablets. But because Android tablets are just barely a year old, it wasn’t that big a deal. What they needed was a tablet to change the game in the same way that the Droid change the smartphone game. It appears that device is right on the horizon. No, it’s not the Kindle Fire, which is more an Amazon tablet than an Android one. It’s the Samsung Galaxy Tab, which will drop not long from now. Once that hits, Android could see a similar spike that it did in smartphones with the Droid.
